We took advantage of a field mission for our client SNCF to give you a behind-the-scenes look at data capture with our drone pilot, Fabien. 

What does the job of a drone pilot at Altametris involve ?  

"The job of a drone pilot isn't just about flying a drone. In fact, my mission begins with a feasibility study. If it is validated, we undertake all administrative procedures to obtain the necessary flight authorizations for the mission. Then, I proceed with operational preparation. This phase involves developing flight plans and topographic layout plans to project onto the mission. We also perform a weather check a few days before departure to ensure that drone flights can be conducted safely.

Generally, for our SNCF clients, once the mission is validated, I start by going to the operation area to ensure that everything established conforms to the satellite mapping and SNCF's expectations. Then, we establish a Preliminary Joint Inspection (ICP), a necessary safety plan to operate in the work zone.

After the flight, at the end of the day, I extract the data from my drone, ensure its validity, and transmit it to our processing offices in Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, or Marseille."

What qualities are required to be a good drone pilot ?  

"To be a drone pilot, you need to be trained. In the industry, you cannot operate drones without proper training. The training followed depends on the regulatory scenario for drone usage.

A good drone pilot is someone who can analyze a situation in real-time, allowing them to decide whether to fly or not. During the flight, it’s their instinct that will guide them to choose different types of flight plans or manual flying."

What are the strengths of Altametris drone pilots ? 

"Altametris is one of the few companies where drone pilots are versatile.

They have the capability to operate small drones, fixed-wing drones, and the Ricopter drone, which is the most efficient for topography using LiDAR scanning.

Additionally, Altametris holds the exclusive rights to the Ricopter drone in France.

Finally, our drone pilots are trained to work across the entire chain: from data capture missions to data processing missions."
